What is an Induction Motor
- The inductor motor is also called an asynchronous motor and in this motor current in the rotor causes torque in the result of the field of stator winding crossing it. The motor does not need an electrical connection with rotors.
- Its rotor can be in the form of a wound-type or squirrel cage. Comonly used motors in industries are 3-phase squirrel cage that has self-starting features and low cost.
- Single-phase induction motor used in small loads like at homes or operating static power tools.
Working Principle of Induction Motor
- When supply is provided to the stator of mtors flux is produced in the stator and in the result of current flow. The winding of rotors is in a short circuit configuration.
- The flux of the stator cut circuit or winding of the rotor and based on the Faraday law of electromagnetic induction current flow in the rotor winding. Due to that current flux is produced in the rotor.
- These two fluxes support each other and torques produce rotors rotates, with this principle both single and three-phase induction motors work
What is Synchronous Speed
- It is a rotating field in the stator of the motor. Synchronous speed is based on motor poles and input voltage frequency.
- The formula of synchronous speed is:

- Here Ns is synchronous speed fe is frequency and P is motor poles.
- The rotor moving speed is less as compared to synchronous speed, so the motor runs at a speed less than the synchronous speed.
- Rotating field in static share affects the motor and causes flux variation in rotor with causes for moving and speed less then synchronous speed.

- It has 2 main parts first one is stator and second one is rotor. In stator voltage are provided and rotor rotates to provide the torque to load.
What is an Induction Generator
- Induction generators also called asynchronous generators convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. It is called asynchronous since has a rotation speed less than synchronous speed.
- It operates at an induction motor at the start with a speed less as compared to synchronous speed and positive slip.
- If the speed of the prime mover increases more than the synchronous speed, the slip is negative and causes a reverse current that produces current in the stator.
- It is used in renewable energy like hydro turbines and wind turbines and it is best to work for variable speed and at constant output frequency.

- Squirrel cage induction motor used for generator in condition when move speed higher than synchronous speed.

- The main disadvantage of induction generators is that not produce reactive power. It uses reactive power of supply for getting excitation. So of induction generator needed synchronous machines to provide reactive power.
