Introduction to the 1982 Penny

- Reverse Designer: Frank Gasparro
- Diameter = 19 mm
- Weight: 11g (at starting time), 2.5g (new weight)

1982 Penny History
Before 1982, mostly copper pennies were used. In the beginning of 1973, the price of copper increased, which resulted in the change in the composition of pennies to 95% copper and 5% zinc. As an alternative to copper mint, about 1.5 million aluminum Lincoln pennies were made with the date of 1974. But Congress did not approve these coins, and most of them got destroyed.
In 1979 the one pound of copper increased the one dollar limit. As a result, in 1981, the mint changed the cent composition from 95 percent copper to 0.04% copper and a 99.2% zinc core.
On January 7, 1982, the creation of copper-plated zinc pennies started in the West Point mint.
Coins made from West Point do not have a mint mark, so it is difficult to differentiate between these coins and those made at Philadelphia.
The Denver Mint made bronze Lincoln pennies until October 21, 1982. About 6 billion coins were made by D mint.
The S mint made more than 1.5 million regular strike coins and more than 3 million 1982 proof coins.
