Hello readers welcome to the new post here we will discuss the Difference Between a Single and Double Pole Breaker. Circuit breaker used for regulation of curent in the circuit. Every outlet in the home circuit comes with a wiring system operated with a circuit breaker. The circuit can handle some amount of current at a certain point. if there is a high current passing through the circuit wire insulation can be affected or can cause a fire. So braker is used to find the high current in the circuit that called an electrical fault. When the breaker senses fault in the circuit breakers the circuit. Here we will cover details of double pole circuit breakers and make comparisons with single pole breakers. So let’s get started with the Difference Between a Single and Double Pole Breaker
Introduction to Single-Pole Breaker?
- The single pole break is a common type of circuit breaker used in our home circuits. The word single pole means that it features to protect a single wire.
- Single pole breakers are narrow switches that exist at the home electrical panel. Since they transfer current in a controlled way they are best used in devices that use less current
- .The rating of single poles is about 15 to 30 amper. They are made to provide power to 120-volt outlets and devices
- It is employed for vacuums, TVs, hairstyle tools, and phone charges.
- This breaker is energy-effective since it needs less power to operate.Â
- The wiring of a single pole breaker is that one hot wire and one neutral wire are used. If a single pole breaker is overloaded just the affected breaker will trip.
Introduction to Double Pole Breaker
- Double pole breakers come with two poles. These pole breaker slots come with a hot bus and a neutral wire. The third cable used for wiring
- its rating is twenty to sixty ampers for less volt devices and can handle 240 volts
- The circuit breaker is used for high-voltage devices like Air conditioners, electric ranges, etc.
How to wire a double pole breaker?
There are two live wires connected with a single neutral wire in a double pole breaker. That means if one of the hot wires comes with a short circuit they trip. it can be used for service of two separate 120 vols circuits or single 240 volts circuits
For wiring the double pole breaker follow these points
- First of all off the power supply to the service panel at the main breaker. These breakers are configured on top of the service panel
- Disconnect the breaker panel by unlocking the connection corners
- Ensure that another double pole breaker has space. There is a need for two horizontal slots. Tranfer the breaker from the bus bar on the design of the current breaker. if there are no slots open get a subpanel.
- Remove the external part of the service panel of one of the round knock-out plates. The wires running in the box pass through these holes. The cable connectors must be connected in the hole. The locknut of connectors on the inner side of the panel is connected.
- Connect wires through cable connectors from a heavy-duty system and connect them with clamping screws. Ensure the feed cable to the circuit breaker.
- Connect the white wire of the cable with a neutral bus bar that can be found from neutral wire contacts on other circuits. Make a connection of bare copper or green ground wires with a neutral bus bar.
- Put black and red wires in double poles and connect screws.
- Put the breaker in the hot bus bar. it will then slip in without pushing the point.
Different Between a Single and Double Pole Breaker?
- The basic difference between them is the quality of single or double-pole beaker voltage ampers and their connection of wiring.
- A single pole breaker can provide 120 volts an ampere is fifteen to 20 and has one hot wire and a neutral wire. It’s how wire and neutral wire are connected to a single pole breaker. This breaker moves if it is overloaded of energy on single pole breakers.
- The double pole breaker offers 240 volts and its campers are 20 to 60. It has two hot wires with a single neutral wire. This breakers machine of 240 VAC can comprise about 60 ampers with two hot wires.
 Application Of Single-Pole Circuit Breakers
- it used in household devices
- it used in vacuums or hair dryers
- it is used for lighting outdoor lights
Application Of Double-Pole Circuit Breaker
- it is used in water heaters that need current to control the system
- it used in electrical ranges
- Double pole breaker used in dryers
- It used in AC unit
Can a Double Pole Breaker be Replaced with Two Single Pole Breakers?
- With a double pole switch, we can control two lights on different circuits or lights. Since just one side or switch is used on both sides, a double pole switch can be connected work a single pole switch.

Why would you use a double pole breaker?
Double pole breaker used to protect two wires and normally provide curent for larger 240 volts devices. Like cloth dryers and water heaters. 15 to 200 ampers is a rating of double pole breakers.
