Here, we will learn Doorbell Wiring Diagram: 2025 Step By Step Guide. The doorbell is a commonly used tool in our homes, and in this post, we will cover wiring details. Before wiring the doorbells, we will cover some basic points for the bell. So, let’s get started with the Doorbell Wiring Diagram.
Parts of Doorbell
The 3 main parts of a doorbell are the push button, the chime, and the transformer that is used to make the connection between the chime and the button
Push Button
The doorbell push button connected to the home’s exterior is usually close to the entry door. When the doorbell button is pressed, a chime rings to give instructions that someone is at the door. Since they are external components of the home, the doorbell push buttons have different types of materials and designs.
Chime
The chime is used to generate sound in the doorbell system, it rings when the doorbell button is pressed. Here, you can see a diagram of the doorbell chime. The main parts are explained here.
Terminals:
They are connected to the main part of the chime; these terminals are used to wire from the doorbell push button and transformer with chime. Normally, doorbell chimes have 3 terminals, rear, trans, and front, connected to each connection. The rear terminal makes a rear push button connection with the chime, the front terminal has a front push button connection with the chime, and trans terminals connect the chime to the transformer.
Resonators:
There are two flat metal bars connected to and below the terminals of the doorbell chime. Resonators are tuned with notes of bell ring and generate notes when struck.
Solenoids are electromagnets created with a coil of wire that generates a magnetic field when the current passes through the wire. In the doorbell chime if current passes from the push button to the solenoid, an electromagnetic field pulls the solenoid downward. The hammer where the coin is found strikes the chime resonator to generate the first note. After that, when the current was produced, the solenoid and the hammer bounced back in the up position and struck the upper resonator to generate 2nd note.
In some doorbell chimes shown above, a small barrier will block one solenoid from hitting the upper chime, helping us to distinguish between two note rings of the front doorbell and one note ring of the rear doorbell. The doorbell transformer wires in the electrical system and helps to connect the doorbell push button and chime at low voltage. They can connect on or outer side of the home and are normally connected with an electrical junction box. Here, you can see a diagram of the doorbell transformer.
Screw Terminals:
There are 2 screw terminals in the doorbell transformer. One connects to the doorbell chime, and the other to the doorbell push button.
Ground, Neutral, & Hot Wires:
These wires make a connection with the home’s electrical system. That are ground wire is green in color, the neutral wire is white, and the hot is black
Types of Doorbells
Wired Doorbells
- Wired doorbells are connected to the electrical circuit of the house, so it not needed certain notes for battery to work these doorbells. The wired doorbell requires low maintenance it can work for about ten years and can easily be replaced.
Wireless Doorbells
- Wireless doorbells operated with the use of radio waves. The doorbell is connected externally at home without drilling, and then connect transmitter in a house within range of the doorbell. This doorbell needed battery replacement or recharging after some time based on the model of your doorbell.
Smart Doorbells
- Smart doorbells can easily connect with apps on your phone and there is a feature for speaking with a person at the door through the doorbell. It also has features to see the person through cameras or can talk with him. Smart doorbells can be connected with ethernet or are wireless and they need a WIFI connection
Doorbell Wiring Diagram
A single Doorbell Push Button with a Single Chime
it is simple doorbell wiring. Here, we can see the push button connected with one of the button terminals in the chime. The circuit is completed with a transformer that is connected to both the doorbell chime and the doorbell push button.
Double Doorbell Push Buttons connected to a Single Chime
This configuration is standard if a doorbell is needed at the front and back of the home. Since both push buttons are connected with the terminal on the chime, the bell can be ringed at the door, and one chime will ring.
Single Doorbell Push Button with Double Chimes
In this design, the front doorbell push button is connected with the front terminal of both chimes and the transformer is with the trans terminal of both chimes. If there is a need to have the high sound of the bell in front areas of the home, this connection is used.
Double Doorbell Push Buttons with Double Chimes
in this wiring, the push button connects the front terminals on both chimes. Both push buttons are connected to a transformer connected to both chimes at trans terminals. If you need doorbells at two doors of homes and you want to hear their noise at different locations, this wiring can be used.
How to Remove a Doorbell Push Button
- With the use of a screwdriver, unscrew the 2 screws holding the doorbell and push the button on the wall. If the screws holding the button in position are down, remove the plate covering first. It can done with a knife or flathead screwdriver.
- Show the wiring backside of the button without damage.
- With the use of a screwdriver, unscrew the screws holding wires in position in the rear of the bell and push the button. When screws are loose, we can pull wires and free the doorbell button.
- If you are installing a new doorbell push button using the same wires, it is good to cover them with tape to avoid them falling out of place.
How to Remove a Doorbell Chime
- Find the location of the chime that is located at the entry door.
- Remove its outer plate.
- The chime comes with two or three wires connected to central terminals. Wrap a small piece of tape on each wire and mark according to the terminal with it connected so we do not have to forget later on
- With the use of a screwdriver, loose screws hold terminal wires in position in the chime. You can release them when the screw is loose
- When wires are loose, remove the chime from the wall with the use of a screwdriver to unscrew a larger screw on any side of the chime. Put your hand on the chime when you lose 2nd screw so it does not fall on the floor. Ensure that wires are held from the back, and the chime is pulled off the wall.
How to Remove a Doorbell Transformer
Step 1: Locate your doorbell transformer.
- The transformer is connected to the external side of the home like the garage and basement. SO locate it first
- Transformer has two screw terminals having wires. Unscrew these screws to release two wires. Label them if there is many doorbells connected to the transformer. So, tape groups of wires according to the terminal to which they are connected. It is best to tape wires along well so we can lose them during work on another transformer component.
- Remove the electrical junction box cover to see the wiring.
- Three wires green, white, and black, connecting with the transformer will have wire caps connecting the transformer wires to the system with related tires. Disconnect the transformer from the home supply with unwiring caps and then separate wires.
- Transformer is configured in position with the junction box with a later bolt or set screw. If there is a bolt use a wrench to lose it. If there are screws, use a screwdriver to lose them. When it gets free, pull the transformer out of place and thread its wires from the junction box.
How to Install a Doorbell Transformer
Step 1: Connect the transformer with an electrical junction box.
Step 2: Make a connection of transformer power supply wires with hoes power supply wires
Step 3: Replace the electrical junction box cover
Step 4: Connect doorbell push button and chime wires with screw terminals
How to Install a Doorbell Push Button
Step 1: Find the outer wires and connect them with the push button
Step 2: Put the push button on the wall and screw in its position
Step 3:Put cover over push button plate
How to Install a Doorbell Chime
Step 1:Trace doorbell chime wires
Step 2: Screw the chime on the wall
Step 3: Connect doorbell wires to the accurate terminal in the chime.
Step 4: Put the cover on the chime
