Two main sources of cabinet light are halogen light and LED lighting. While each option fits neatly and offers open light, there is a big difference between the two.
- Before exploring under wardrobe lighting products, one should understand the basic features of each type of light source. Halogen lamps work similarly to incandescent lamps because they produce light by burning the tungsten cord when connected to a power source.
- The only difference is that the glass lamp that closes the cord is filled with gas in the halogen group. This allows the glass to stay close to the cord without melting; thus allowing the lamp size to be more compact. Halogen helps to replicate burnt tungsten atoms back into the cell making them last longer. To ensure that the glass does not melt, it must be large enough to handle the additional heat load.

- When an energy source stimulates electrons throughout the P-N process, visible light is produced in the form of photons. Using LEDs as a light source brings very high brightness. Because it does not waste energy to generate unwanted heat, it is considered to be the most energy-efficient light source and the best light source under cabinet lighting.
- The way manufacturers have used this technology under cabinet lighting products reflects the properties of each source. Because halogen bulbs generate so much heat, they are fitted mainly to a 120V light bar and also use an air circulation system to cool the lamp and cabinet surface. This consumes a lot of energy to produce light and the display tends to be larger and more visible than desired.
- The LED under the cabinet lights is very compact. They do not require a cooling system, and because they use very little energy, they tend to operate at low power sources. A single 12 volt AC / DC adapter can effectively light up an opposing space under 12 cabinets or more.
- And because the straps work with low voltage power, the installation is made easier. The strings of LED lights and elements can be connected to a series of male and female plugs from a power source already connected to the store.
