An isolator is a type of switch that provides connection and breakage of current flow in a circuit. Isolators are made according to compatibility with IEC 60947-3 and their main functions are isolation and,On off-switching. Normally used for the main switch or incoming inside distribution board, the isolator does not provide protection. It is used for disconnection circuit from the power supply to get an isolation
Classification of Isolators
Double Break Type Isolators
Double break isolator comes with 3 loads of post insulator. In these types center, insulator comes with tubular contact or flat male that becomes straight through the spinning central insulator. At the lower of post insulator, the lever technique used for central post-insulator rotation.
Single Break Type Isolators
It comes with arm contact broken in two components. One arm contact is used for holding male contact, and the other is used for holding female contact. The shift is measured in arm contact due to rotation of post insulator when they are fixed. This rotation of post insulator is reversed and causes the shutting isolator through arm contact.
Pantograph Type Isolators
This type of isolator needs less space than other types. They are also connected through the current switchgear connection. It comes with a post and an operating insulator. Electrical isolators are divided into 3 types they are
Bus Side Isolator
This type of isolator configured on the power system location is a bus-side isolator, that is connected to the main bus.
Line Side Isolator
The line side isolator is connected in a circuit through the feeder inline side
Transfer Bus Side Isolator
This type of isolator is connected in a circuit through the transformer’s major bus
Optical isolator:
It isolates circuits through optical signals that normally come with optical fiber or LED and photosensitive diodes. Optical isolators come with high isolation and good operation and are used for industrial automation, communication networks, and other fields.
Working of Isolator
The working of the electrical isolator is easy since it works with use of different methods such as semi-automatic, fully automatic, and manual operation. In some conditions, operators use isolators like switches for circuits. In a result, they are called electrical isolator switches. In these features, they are open and close according to requirements. But they are connected at fixed positions in the circuit and provide isolation to circuits such as transformer.
These devices are unique that isolate certain components of the circuit to avoid and maintain current flow. Normally they are used for power grids and kitchen tools.
Applications of Isolators
- Isolators are used for protection from accidental damage. They come with a locking system or lock external that offers any accidental uses.
- It is used in high-voltage devices such as transformers.
- It is used for cut out part of the circuit in a substation when a fault is caused.
How do I install an isolator switch?
The isolator switch is used to interrupt the current. it is used as a safety device from electric shock. Isolator switches are known as circuit breakers or safety switches.
Installing the isolator process is easy, first there it a need for a disconnector switch best for the home electrical system.
Then need to connect easily to access the location. At last, connect the switch at the breaker panel.
After the connection of the disconnector, there is a need to check it working accurately. For the testing switch, there is a need to power off the circuit for testing. After the power supply is off, need to turn the switch off. It will make sure that the power is off and no chance of again on
What is the purpose of an isolator?
Isolated is a manually operated mechanical switch that separates faulty parts of the substation. It is used for parting faulty components for repairing working parts to avoid occurrences of faults. It is also called a disconnector or disconnecting switch.
What is the difference between a switch and an isolator?
Is the isolator a breaker?
The isolator is off-load device that can operated when no current in the circuit and power is off. While the circuit breaker is on the load device it can work when the power supply is on
