- LM258 is a versatile and extremely low-noise op-amp. Due to its compact size, the device can be implemented in some of the smallest and lightest single-supply amplifiers. LM258 is an ideal amplifier for use as transducer amplifiers or dc amplification blocks.
- LM258 is a digital type of operational amplifier (op-amp) based on transistor technology. It is widely used in circuit design and applications requiring high accuracy and low leakage currents, such as transducer amplifiers.
- LM258’s complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) architecture allows for more features than conventional CMOS operation, reducing system integration costs and enabling new designs.
- The LM258 IC employed for op-amplifiers operation circuits like comparator, differential amplification or mathematical operations. Moreover, the device is specifically designed for applications like transducer amplifiers, dc amplification blocks to be implemented more easily in single-supply case.
- Since LM258 IC is based on CMOS technology, it can be used with a single supply power supply and can provide two independent supply voltages with only one external capacitor connected across its output terminals. And since the input terminals of LM258 are fixed at a maximum voltage of 18 volts while output terminals of LM258 are fixed at a maximum voltage of 20 volts, no external emitter resistor is required to connect between these two power supplies.
LM258 Input stage design
- The LM258 is a dual operational amplifier IC it is an input stage design that can be implemented more easily in a single-supply, single-supply system. Moreover, the device is specifically designed for applications like transducer amplifiers, dc amplification blocks to be implemented more easily in a single-supply, single-supply system.
- However, the device has low noise and distortion characteristics making them suitable for use in the high-frequency application.
- The device features two transistors and include a single supply or multiple supplies operation. The output swing of LM258 IC can be controlled by a programmable gain control algorithm.
Output stage design
- The dual operational amplifier IC (DOP) consists of two buffers for the same input channel. An output stage is provided for each channel, which is often used in single-supply applications.
- Moreover, it can be designed to be implemented more easily in single-supply applications by using the two op amps as a single buffer.
- A total of two outputs are possible with the device. One output can be directly connected to the input terminal while the other is connected to an adjustable feedback resistor or an external resistor that provides a correction network for each output channel.
Differential Amplification application
- We have already examined time and time again how important differential amplification is to many applications. A few of those are found in the following paragraphs.
- Perhaps you’ve been wondering about how to implement a differential amplifier circuit in a single-supply device. The differential amplifier circuit can be implemented in an op-amp in one of the following ways:
- One option is to use a LM358 op-amp . In this case we make use of the op-amp’s capability to amplify only the positive input signal while attenuating the negative input signal, resulting in the output being biased at zero volts.
- This method can be implemented by using any low cost LM358 op amp ICs like LM3581,LM3586, LM3587 etc., or even LM7825A which requires just two transistors and two diodes for its operation.
- The second option is to use a dual operational amplifier IC such as LM258 . In this case, we use a dual operational amplifier IC with separate feedback network components connected between the positive and negative inputs. This way we can boost both inputs together at any level far beyond ordinary values which increases the gain of our circuit significantly.
- We will now see some application examples for these types of differential amplifier circuits in single supply devices and for dual supply devices respectively:
- The first example uses LM358 IC , so that it may use a single supply voltage source with 3V or 5V pin if needed . We also provide DC bias pins on each output pin independently for single supply and dual supply circuits respectively . One common pin on LM358 IC is ground (GND) or +5V when used as single supply device circuit. The other common pin is +3V3 when used as dual supply device circuit .
- We also provide DC bias pins on each output pin independently for single supply and dual supply circuits respectively . One common pin on LM358 IC is ground (GND) or +5V when used as single supply device circuit.
- The other common pin is +3V3 when used as dual supply device circuit . We also provide DC bias pins on each output pin independently for single supply and dual supply circuits respectively.
NOTE : For multiple supplies , an additional ground (GND) wire should be connected between negative power terminal (signal side) and positive power terminal (ground side). If there are any trouble at all , do not connect GND
- The LM258 is a voltage-controlled operational amplifier that can be used as an input stage of low-speed, high-accuracy single-supply transistors. This device is optimized to operate at low speed and high accuracy without current limitations and has very low power consumption.
- It’s a versatile device that can be used in various applications like analog and digital circuits, audio amplifiers, PLL filters, precision voltage regulators, etc.
- As its name suggests the LM258 is a dual op-amp IC with two inputs. Each input has its own inverting input terminal and their non-inverting output terminal respectively. The noninverting input terminal of the first op-amp is also connected to each other’s noninverting output terminals for two pairs of outputs which can be used in different applications..
- In this project, we will be taking a look at the LM258 dual operational amplifier IC which is used to realize general-purpose op-amp operation circuits like comparator, differential amplification or mathematical operations. Moreover, the device is specifically designed for applications like transducer amplifiers, dc amplification blocks to be implemented more easily in single-sup
Mathematical operations circuit
LM258 is one of the most commonly used op-amp ICs in digital applications. It is a versatile, low-noise and high-speed 8-bit dual operational amplifier whose input ranges from 0 to 10V with a gain of about 1.7x. The device functions with two different signal inputs (0.1µF/50V or 0 to 100mA) and can operate from an external power supply at 5V or from the internal supply of 5V via the 50K resistor.
However, its capability of 2x operation with input voltage range as low as 0 to 2V enabled it to be utilized in various applications requiring functions like transducer amplification, differential amplifier, analog-digital conversion, and mathematical operations like differentiation and integration.
The LM258 device features a highly integrated layout with integrated level shifters for feedback control in addition to an internal voltage regulator circuit which allows it to operate without external power supply voltages
