The light switch wiring is an important process for an electrical system. The most commonly used single-pole switch is a simple type of switch in the electrical system. The single-pole switch comes with two states on or off. If it has on state, it means closed, and the circuit has current flow and light or other devices connecting working. If the switch is off, it means open states and not current flowing. Here we will cover different types of light switch wiring techniques. Let’s get started with Introduction to Light Switch Wiring.
How Does Light Switch Wiring Work?
The writing process of light switch-based power delivery to either a lightbox or switch box. These configurations of electrical switches are power-through switches and end-line switches.
Power-Through Switches Wiring
In power through a wiring connection, power first goes to the switch box. The live wire that is common from the service panel moves to the switch before connecting with the flight fixture.
In this configuration, 2 wires go to the switch box, one for power and one for the fixture. The black wire connected with every terminal of the switch and neutral is spliced.
In the condition when the power goes to the first switch box first, the neutral white line of the service panel and the white line that connected with the light are spliced.
The hot black wire of the power source first passes through the switch and then goes towards the light. That helps to control light through on and off the switch.
End-Line Switches Wiring
If the wiring is such that power is going to the light fixture before going to the switch, that means the wiring is end line. In this wiring, there is a single wire that goes into the switch box that is coming from the fixture.
The white wire of the switch is used as a hot wire and is marked black. If the wire that has power first goes in the box, then the circuit needs to be wired so the switch can control the black line. The white wire of the service panel is connected with light and a black wire spliced with black wire in the cable that goes to the switch. The white wire is connected to the switch and goes to the black end, connected to the light. Switch can control the current flow.
How to Wire a Light Switch
Follow these steps for wiring a light switch.
Tools and materials required
- Arrange some tools for wiring of light switches, such as
- Flat-head screwdriver.
- Voltage tester
- Wire stripper
- Plier
Turn off Power
- Move to the breaker that is controlling the light and another circuit of the home off it.
- You can also off the main breaks, but it will off the complete supply to the home.
- After turning off the breaker, use the voltage tester to make sure that the power is off, then start the work.
Remove the Switch
- Now remove the old switch and pull it away from the box. The wires connected to the switch are power in and power out for light.
- So not them, which is in and which one is out.
Connect Switch
- The basic working of single poles is to break the circuit. The simple two methods used for wire connection with switches are screws or push-in connectors.
- The push-in connector releases the wire with releases that exist close to the wire. Then remove one wire from the old switch by loosening the screw.
- Make sure that the wire has a good structure if you have corrosion trim with cutters.
- In some screw terminals, strip 3/4 inch insulation in the wire.
- Bend the wire in the loop for moving about the screw on the new switch.
- Tight screw so wires do not move.
- For push-in connectors, a new switch will come with the measurement shown on it for stripping wire.
- The wire needs to be straight and have good condition for push-in connectors.
Restore Power
- After putting the cover on the switch and finishing the wiring process, restore power and check the new switch is working for light.

How to Wire a Three-Way light Switch
A 3 way switch is used for controlling lights connected in the hallway from any end. It comes with one more terminal on one side. The main function of three-way switch wiring is to control lights at more than 2 different locations.

How to wire a 2-way light switch
In the diagram below, you can see terminals denoted as L1, L2, COM, and earth. Some switches made with plastic do not have earth terminals, and some do, but all metallic switches do. Earth terminals are used to connect the earth to a metallic box.
For 2-way configuration, a single light and 2 switches are used. The main hot wire is connected to the COM pin, and the wire that is moving to light is connected with the COM of the other switch.
Terminals L1 and L2 of both switches connected with each other.
wire a 2-way light dimmer
Not all dimmers support two-way switching. Some dimmers support two-way switches, but only one switch can control the dimmer.
For using many dimmers on a single circuit use a smart dimmer. Here you can see the wiring of the 2-way light dimmer circuit.

How to wire a single pole light switch
For wiring the single-pole light switch, make sure that brown wire is used as the load or hot wire, but in some conditions, red or black is also used.
The neutral wire is blue or white.
For a single-pole light switch, the brown wire is used to connect the light switch, and then the brown wire is connected to a switch to the light. The switch works like a power supply control to reach the light switch.
Through passing the light switch, the neutral wire is connected to the light fixture. It completes the circuit.

Type of Cable and Fuse for a Lighting Circuit
The electrical cables that are used for the lighting circuit are 1mm or 1.5mm2 twin and earth that base the distance of the wire connection. The MCB used for lighting circuits has a rating of 6 amps, and for conventional fuse boards, 5 amps are used.
