If we do a comparison between these motors then we will come to know that there is the main difference between them is their structure and operation. Such applications are where there is no use or less use of a stepper motor where a servo motor is employed. the speed offered by the stepper motor is less than the servo motor. - In the stepper motor, every pole gets energized in order so the motor operates in sequence.
- The stepper motor offered accurate behavior at a reasonable cost like less speed and good accuracy.
What is Servo Motor
- The structure of the servo motor is like the stepper motor in that it also consists of a rotor created through a permanent magnet and a stator having windings.
- The flux generated at the stator links the rotor and applies the force of rotation.
- this motor has a smaller number of pols than the stepper motor.
- The structure of the servo motor is more sophisticated than the stepper motor. Its operating speed is larger than a stepper motor.
- Due to the large speed, it is preferred to use such an application where high torque is needed.
How Do Stepper Motors Work?
- It works on through the rotation of the toothed rotor in small and accurate steps. The rotor is magnetized through a sequence of digital pulses that are produced through driver circuitry.
- The position of the rotor is tracked through an encoder that provides feedback to the control system. The control system can adjust the pulse sequence to get the required position and speed
How Do Servo Motors Work?
- This motor is operated through the use of a control system to monitor the position of the motor and speed with adjusted voltage and current provided to winding of more motor accordingly.

Types of Stepper Motors
- There are 3 main types of stepper motors first one is permanent magent stepper motors, 2nd one is variable reluctance stepper motors and 3rd one is hybrid stepper motors.
- Permanent magent stepper motors come with rotors with permanent agents and stators of electromagnetic coils.
- If coils get energies in any sequence the magentic field generated with the stator interacts with the magnetic field of the rotor. In a result, the rotor rotates in steps.
- Variable reluctance stepper motors has a rotors made with the use of soft magentic material with no permanent magnets. The stator coil produces a field that has an attraction for rotor teeth and causes the rotor to move
- Hybrid stepper motors:Â It offers combined features of PM and VR stepper motors, providing high torque and better operation features than the other two motors
Types of Servo Motors
- Servo motors have 2 types AC servo motors and DCÂ servo motors.Â
- AC servo motors are used for industries since have high output, good speed, and efficiency.
- DC servo is used where small battery-operated devices work since have low power demand
- AC servo has two subtypes synchronous or asynchronous, according to rotor and stator magnetic field features
- Synchronous AC servo motors come with constant speed for different loads and have a rotor rotating in a synchronous fashion to the stator’s magnetic field.Â
Applications of Stepper Motors
- Stepper motor has features to use full torque at a standstill and speed can regulated through the frequency of pulses at every pole and can move at a slow speed without overheating
- It moslty usedfor 3D printing machines, CNC machine centers, and welding instruments.
- Small form factor it provides and its open loop design help to use for small electronics.
