Difference Between Power Transformer and Distribution Transformer

- It transmits a voltage level of less than thirteen kilovolts at industry and for the domestic level transmits the 440V to 220 volts. Its efficiency level is fifty to seventy percent
- It is attached at the user’s end and load fluctuation are high. These transformers not fully load all day so iron losses occur in the whole day and copper losses occur according to load attached.

Distribution Transformer Construction

Power Transformer vs. Distribution Transformer
Distribution Transformer
- The distribution transformer is used for reducing the high voltage level to a low voltage level.
- This type of transformer is connected to the load side at the user’s end.
- Its main working is to step down the voltage level.
- Its power rating is less than 200MVA.
- Normally voltage ratings for distribution transformers are 11 kV, 6.6 kV, 3.3 kV, 440 V, 220 V, 110 V, etc.
- Its primary winding is connected in a delta structure, and its secondary winding is connected in a star connection.
- It comes with a single primary winding, and the secondary winding is single or tapped.
- It is a small-size transformer and is operated for load and no load conditions.
- These transformers continue working for light loads.
- It can handle easily load fluctuations.
- It comes with low flux density.
- It works at a load lower value than a full load.
- They provide 60 to 70 percent of the highest efficiency of rated load.
- They come with small leakage reactance.
Power Transformer
- This transformer type comes with high power handling features, has high voltage ratings, and is employed for power system transmission.
- Its main function is to increase the voltage level to a high value for the transmission of electric power over longer distances.
- It is connected to generation stations and transmission substations and connected in the transmission part of the power system.
- These transformers are used for stepping up voltage levels, but step-down features are also provided.
- Its power rating is more than 200 MVA.
- Voltage ratings of power transformers are 33 kV, 66 kV, 132 kV, 220 kV, 440 kV, and higher.
- Its primary and secondary windings are in a delta connection.
- It comes with single primary winding and single secondary winding.
- It is larger and works only for load periods.
- For low loads, they are not connected to the system.
- It comes with high flux density.
- It operated on full load.
- It provides high efficiency for full load
- It has high leakage reactance.
- Voltage regulation is not the main factor for this transformer.
Can we use a power transformer as a distribution transformer?
- Power transformers are used for transmission and receiving and distribution transformers are used for distribution purposes. The voltage ratio of the power transformer is 756 kV to 11 kV.
