Hi guys welcome to the new post. In this post, we will learn about Difference Between Motor and Generator. The motor is a device that used to convert electrical energy into mechanical energy and the generator transforms mechanical energy into electrical. There are different industrial and practical applications where these two devices are used.
Here we cover some basics about these devices and know about some differences. So let get started with the Difference Between a Motor and a Generator
What is Motor
- The electrical motor is an electric machine used for the conversion of electrical energy into mechanical. It occurs due to the interaction of field and current in winding that produces force in motor.
- Motor working is based on the phenomena of electromagnetism
- Motor input is given based on type DC motors get power from batteries, rectifiers and AC motors get power from AC sources like inverters, and ac generators induction generator or synchronous generators.
Types of Motor
Basic types of motors are
- AC Motor
- Shunt motor
- Single Phase motor
- Three-phase Motor
- Special Motor
- Synchronous motor
- Induction motor
- Series motor
What is Generator
- The generator is a machine that is used for the conversion of mechanical energy into electrical energy. It gets mechanical energy from wind turbines, water, gas turbines, etc.
- First time electrical generator was used by Faraday in 1831,. That generator is also called Faraday Disk. This generator was to deliver power to the grid station.
Working of Motor
- A motor gets AC or DC power based on types and transforms it into mechanical energy based on the electromagnetic induction phenomenon.
- The structure of the motor is that has two parts, a stator, and a rotor.
- When curent passes in the motor stator of the motor with copper coil produces a magnetic filed. The moving rotor is connected with the shaft and it interacts with the magnetic field and produces Lorent force on the rotor that in a result faces torque and rotates. As a result, mechanical energy is produced.
- The rotation of the motor can controlled by controlling of voltage flow and current in motors.
Working of Generator
- The generator working is reverse to the motor. The generator’s main parts are the stator and roto. There is a coil of wire that moves fastly with use of mechanical force in a magnetic field that produces electromagnetic induction. As a result, electrons in the coil move, and current is produced.
- The speed of the rotation control generator working. The working of the generator based on the Faraday law of electromagnetic induction
Difference Between Motor and Generator
Motor
- Motor transforms electrical energy into mechanical energy
- Common examples of motors are machines, fans,s etc.
- Electrical energy used for mechanical energy production
- Rotation of motor controlled with current supplied.
- Motor input is AC or DC
- Common uses are fans, industrial machines, pumps, vehicles, etc.
- Its working direction is unidirectional
Generator
- It transforms mechanical energy into electrical energy
- Common examples are power plants that generate curent
- The out of generator is curent or electricity
- The rotational speed of generators is controlled with external rotational speed applied as input.
- The prime move used for providing input energy to the generator
- it can work in both direction
Faqs
What is the difference between AC generator and DC motor?
- Ac generator current reverse direction in periodical fashion. In DC generators curent passes only in one direction. In an AC generator coil where current passes are fixed with magent moves. The structure is simple and low-cost
What is the difference between a motor and an alternator?
- The motor is used for the conversion of chemical or electrical energy into mechanical energy and the alternator is a generator that uses mechanical energy for producing of electrical energy.
Can a generator be used as a motor?
- The electrical generator can work as an electric motor. Hybrid vehicles and other low-weight power system motor generation is single electric current machines that used as motor or generator transform electrical power and mechanical power.
What is the difference between main engine and generator?
- The engine is used for the conversion of energy into different forms of mechanical energy. While generators are used for the conversion of mechanical energy into electrical energy.
What is the main difference between generator and alternator?
- Altenator converted mechanical energy into ac electrical energy. The generator converts mechanical energy into AC or DC energy. Alternator induces ac curent. Generators can produce alternating or direct current.
