The installation process and wiring of a ceiling fan are basic works for electronic lovers to connect the fan to the ceiling and wire in a proper way. There are different types of wiring combinations used for ceiling fan installation. Here we will learn some basic techniques. So let’s get started with How to Wire a Ceiling Fan.
Prepping to Wire a Switch for a Ceiling Fan
You must know about some details before wiring a ceiling fan about fan wiring working according to your home wiring. Normally ceiling fans come with different colors of wires for making connections with ceiling wiring.
Black wire:
- The black wire is a hot wire that goes to a wall switch. In the fan, the black wire gives power to the motor.
White wire:
- It is a neutral wire and is used for circuit completion.
Green or copper wire:Â
- These wires are growing wires and protect fans from electrical surges.
Blue wire:
- This wire is taken from a wall switch and does not exist in a single switch combination. But it is mostly used for ceiling fan wiring with 2 switches. It is also used for pouring light.
Red wire:
- It is the hot wire and connected to a wall switch in the home. For the ceiling fan light, red wire is used for carrying power to the light kit.
Fan or light wiring without switches
- This ceiling fan wiring combination is used for the circuit if you do not have a switch in the room and a fan or light connected. Your fan or light gets power from a power source directly.
- In this wiring technique, use pull chains with a fan or light. Pull chains are used where no switches are in the room. Follow these points for wiring connections.
- First of all, make the connection of the white wires of the fan and the ceiling.
- Do not connect green wire with ground wire.
- Make a connection of black wires.
- Connect blue wires or blue wire with black for lights.
- Now on power and check if the fan is working or not.
Fan Wiring With a Switch for Light and Pull Chain for Fan
It is a commonly used wiring method, this method is used for ceiling fans that need a single light switch. In this process, the ceiling fan with lights is first wrapped in white wire with an electrical tap and made into a hot wire.
For controlling the light with the switch, wiring between the switch and the fan uses the 4th or red wire to provide power to the light.
- Make a connection of the green wire with your home ground wire.
- Make a connection of white wires.
- The red wire of the ceiling with the black wire in the light kit and the black wire in the ceiling with the fan has black wire.
- On power and check the fan
Ceiling Fan Wiring and Light by Separate Switches and Dimmer Switch
- For this wiring, the connection makes the connection of the green or yellow wire of the fan with the ground wire of the home.
- Then the blue wire of the fan with the blue of the home wiring.
- Make the connection of the brown wire with the single-way switch and fan speed regulator. Take the wire connection from the live wire and connect it with a separate single-way switch that will control the light. The brown wire of the fan connects with a single-way switch and fan speed dimmer switch, and the black is connected with a separate single-way switch to control the light.

What color wires go where on a ceiling fan switch?
- The in-house black wire is a hot wire that is for the wall switch. The fan’s black wire gives power to the motors, and the white wire is used as a neutral and finish circuit. Green wire is grounding wire.
What does L 1/2/3 mean on a ceiling fan switch?
- High speed = L-1
- Medium speed = L-2
- Low speed = L-3.
Can you connect the red and black wires on a ceiling fan?
- Yes, we can connect 2 red wires or can connect the red wire with a black wire.
What do 1 and 2 mean on a light switch?
- For 1 way means this switch is on or off. That is a simple type of switch we can use. The single switch controls one light or circuit.
- A 2-way switch has 2 switches for controlling the same light.
What is the correct switch for a ceiling fan?
- For direct cooling breeze, set the ceiling fan direction to counterclockwise in summer. In winter, set it clockwise for updraft and circulate warm air.
Where does the red wire go on a ceiling fan with a remote?
- The red wire is used for on the fan and the black wire is used for fan light, etc with the use of 2 switches, we can do this. If there is a remote receiver in the fan casing, it gets 2 switches places, so use 1 hot wire to give power to the remote receiver. Red our Engineeing Blogs
