Hello, friends. Welcome to the new tutorial. In this post, we will discuss the BC559 General Purpose PNP Transistor. The transistor is an electronic component that has three main pinouts: base, emitter, and collector. It is created with a combination of N-type and P-type materials. It has two main types according to creation: the first one is PNP, and the second one is NPN.
Both have their features and applications according to use and structure. Here we discuss the BC559 transistor with details of its working and other parameters. So let’s get started.
Introduction to BC559 PNP Transistor
The BC559 transistor is a PNP transistor. There are two types of BJT transistors: NPN and PNP. BC559 is part of the PNP transistor series.
There are different application configurations of transistors such as switches and amplifiers. If it is used for amplification, its gain value is the main factor that must be checked before connecting to the circuit.
The value of collector-emitter voltage for this transistor is about -30 volts; V_CBO is -30 V, and the emitter-base voltage is -5 V.
These transistors come with a high value of gain bandwidth and are thus used for high-frequency applications.
In a biased state it has a high current value of -100 mA about the CE junction, and in this condition it is called the saturation state.
If there is no base current at the transistor, it will work at the cut-off region, and the base-emitter voltage for this transistor is about -660 mV.
What is the basic introduction to the transistor?
- The transistor is an electronic component that is used in circuits as part of an amplifier or switch that helps to be used in different electronic devices. Transistors have two PN diodes connected in a single configuration. It has 3 terminals: emitter, base, and collector. Common types of transistors are PNP and NPN
BC559 PinoutÂ
- Collector:Â This pin collected electrode released by the emitter.
- Base: It works like a tap and controls the biasing of the transistor.
- Emitter: Electrons released from the emitter into the first PN junction
BC559 Features
- It is the main part of switching and amplifier circuits.
- VCEO value is about -65V.
- It has less noise as compared to other BC transistor series such as BC556, BC559
- It does not have lead in its structure.

How does a transistor work?
BC449 transistors are PNP transistors, and a PNP transistor is made with doping of N materials with a sandwich-like configuration of two P types.
PNP transistors have holes in the majority carrier, so holes released by the collector are regulated through the emitter.
The difference between PNP and NPN is that NPN has electrons as majority carriers and PNP has holes. So in a PNP transistor, electrons flow from emitter to the collector, so it turns on if there is zero or low current at the base.
NPN starts operating when a high signal is given.
BC559 Applications
- It used for the creation of audio circuits
- The amplifier circuit also uses this transistor
- It is used for relay driver, LED drivers
- It is also part of Audio amplifiers, signal Amplifiers,
- Darlington pair also uses this transistor

What is the general purpose of PNP transistor?
- The general purpose of transistors that it used to control signals for low-power projects. The BC638 is a PNP transistor has a VCE of -60V and IC current of 1A in a TO-92 package.
What is the difference between BC558 and BC557?
- These two are PNP transistors and a collector current value of 00 mA BC 557 has a collector-base voltage value of -45v dc BC 558 comes with a collector-base voltage of -30 V DC.
Which transistor is better NPN or PNP?
- NPN transistors are most used since it has electrons with high mobility as compared to holes, that cause the high flow of current. In PNP transistors, the positive supply line, common input point and output current due to ground current are positive values. That is difficult to design and maintain.
What is equivalent to BC557 PNP transistor?
- BC157, 2SA1943, S8550, BD140, 2N3906, BC558, TIP127 & TIP42.
Can I use 2N2222 instead of BC547?
- 2N2222 and BC547 transistors are general-purpose transistors that are used for circuits; BC547 is best that can be replaced with 2N2222 transistors.
