The 4-Way Toggle Switch comes with 2 pairs of traveler terminals, which are located differently from the 3-way Decora switch. The 4-way switch is used for controlling one light from three or more different points. The 4-way switches are used in larger rooms and halls. Here we will learn about 4-way toggle switches, working, and related features. Let’s get started.
What are toggle switches?
- The toggle switch is a type of electronic switch that is considered the main component of an electronic circuit. Switches are used in circuits to provide on- or off-circuits for current flow. There is metallic contact that is removed from terminals or connects two terminals again in contacts.
- When contact is moved away, current flows, the circuit is open, and the device is off. Toggle switches have features for manual operating hinge, handle, or level phenomena, so these are called toggles.
- In every state this switch lath into place and remain there until not moved back.
- Toggle switches are actuators that are on or off machines. They are also called joystick switches and toggle power switches.
How a 4-Way Switch Works
- The 4-way switch comes with 4 terminals that have two sets of toggle positions. If the switch in upstate current flow in two terminals in downstate, the current flow through the other 2 terminals
- Suppose that a 3-way switch connects travelers’ wire from the switch with one side of the 4-way switch. The other side is connected with a 3-way switch. The light is connected with a 3-way switch. If connected accurately, any switch flipping on the light
Wiring of a 4-Way Switch
- The switch comes with two brass-colored terminal screws and two black or other dark colors.
- It comes with greedy ground terminals and traveler wires that run between 4 and 3-way switch circuits. They deliver power to light from more than one switch.
- There are different wire colors for these switch types. Traveler wires are black and red for non-metallic cables. For conduit, any color wire is used.
- The normal wiring comes with a 2-wire NM that provides power from the breaker panel to the first switch box and a black wire that makes a connection with the first common terminal of the 3-way switch.
- The first 3-way and first 4-way switches are configured through the use of 3-wire NM cable. If the 2nd switch is used, it connects with the first with a 3-wire NM, and one also connects the terminals of the last 4-way unit and the 2nd 3-way load.
- Neutral wires of white colors are connected in the witch box.
4- Way toggle switch wiring Diagrams
Here we have made different 4-way toggle wiring combinations where 4-way toggle switches are working with 3 switches. Two switches are in 3 ways, and the third in 4 ways.
The line connected with the left 3-way switch common point. The 2 travelers’ pins are connected with a pair of travelers’ pins on the 4-way switch. The other terminals are pairs of 4-way switches connected with 3-way switches connected on the right.
Here you can see different wiring combinations of 4-way switches with the use of 3 switches.

Difference between a 3-way switch and a 4-way switch
- The basic difference between 3-way and 4-way switches is points where we can control connected loads or lights.
- The 3-way switch controls light at two different points, and the 4-way switch controls light from 3 different locations.
- The 4-way switch does not require the use of two 3-way devices for working.
What is a toggle used for?
- The toggle switch comes with features to help switch to work between two conditions. It is used for computing systems and programming and helps to make communication for toggling between different modes.
How does a 4-pole toggle switch work?
- The 4-way switch comes with 4 terminals that have two sets of toggle conditions. If the switch is in the up state, the current flows through two terminals. If in the down state, current flows in the other two terminals.
Is a 240v toggle switch an example of a switch?
- The 240V toggle switch is an electrical switch made for working at 240 volts. It is used for heavy-duty circuits. These switches are used in different industries and handling devices in homes and buildings.
What are the parts of a toggle switch?
- It comes with different components such as actuators, contacts, terminal mounting, and housing. The actuator is used for on or off the switch. It is in the form of a lever or handle and made with plastic or metallic materials.
What type of signal is produced by a toggle switch?
- The toggle switch produces a digital signal. Since the toggle switch has two conditions on or off, Analog signals are continuous and can get infinite values as compared to the discrete nature of digital signals.
What are the three types of toggle switches?
- The main types of toggle switches are as
- single pole single throw,
- single pole double throw,
- double pole single throw or double pole double throw
