History Of 1968 Penny
In 1909 at the 100th birthday of President Lincoln pennies were introduced and used for celebrations. The desing of these coins was made by Victor D. Brenner who has the president’s photo on the front side and the reverse side has two wheat stalks. it was the first time the photo of any person was added to the coins. This desing was used until 1958 and in 1959 Memorial was added on the coin’s back side. So 1968 pennies have Lincoln Memorial on the reverse. The composition of pennies also changed from 1909 to 1942
Fifty years later, in honor of the 150th Lincoln’s birth date, the US Mint changed the reverse side of this coin. The assistant designer Gasparro created the redesign featuring the Memorial on the coin reverse. Interestingly, the design also contained a small Lincoln 95% copper and 5% tin or zinc. used. At the time of World War II, the zinc-plated steel penny was made in 1943 year. from 1944 to 1982 again copper was used. In 1982 97.5 percent zinc with copper was used and currently follows this composition.
